Europe in the 8th century

Europe in the 8th century

Before I arrived to power my father was the first ruler of the flask and was starting to found the holy roman empire, and also began to conquer the saxons which i would eventually finish to do. As a king, my father Pepin was very ambitious and he wasn't as fair as my grandfather and I were, so this lead to revolts and economic depression. He desperately re wrote  the legislation of the Franks and donated many cities conquered to the pope which then formed a legal basis for the papal states in the middle ages. He had several wars to expand his realms conquering septimania from the islamic population and defeated Aquitaine. Lastly, there were many revolts by the saxons and the Bavarians.

The last glimpse of my empire

Which factors lead to my rule to end?

I died in 814, and I made sure that my empire and my religious beliefs spread throughout Western Europe. I was determined to divide the realms within my three sons: Charles, Pepin and Louis but sadly Charles and Pepin passed away in 810  and lead me to give my heritage to my calmest son Pepin, who I crowned a year before my death. During the last years of my life hell  broke lose, there were frontier and army problems, civilization revolved, and pest. Before I got very ill I decided to give my most valued treasures to family and local churches; not long after my death I was canonized for being such fair politician, but unfortunately now days christian community doesn't accept it . Now my spirit inhabits the contemporary lands of  western europe as I longly enough left my mark on this earth.

What people thought of me

What did people living under my rule think about me?

Most Europeans denote to me as “The father of Europe”  which I consider is for all the positive changes and the evolution I made in Europe. For I was tempted by power and equality, making the ruling system in his reigns more rigid than ever, promoting warfare, subjectively spreading Christianity,  and strict education. Thus I, Charles the great was fair and all mighty, I was a sole king of many territories with objective plans to improve Europe. I remember being  beloved and he most importantly admired. Serving as inspiration for prodigious contemporary leaders such as Napoleon and Adolf Hitler. I am  yet known to be the father of Europe for my bravery, sacrifice, protection and love towards my people. My people described me with a strong sense of belonging and personality, very generous with my friends but very harsh and cruel with my enemies, which I showed my full potential and strength to. They also admired how I could maintain authority and have an organized community and my passion towards ruling and studying the world. ( I learned different languages such as latin and studied the greeks).

Likewise, many such as Enhiard in 817 and 838 admirably wrote about me and my victories during my reign.
Broad and strong in the form of his body and exceptionally tall without, however, exceeding an appropriate measure…His appearance was impressive whether he was sitting or standing despite having a neck that was fat and too short, and a large belly.” – Article vita karoli magni – written by a Frankish scholar after his death
“Even at this time…he followed his own counsel rather than the advice of the doctors, whom he very nearly hated, because they advised him to give up roasted meat, which he loved, and to restrict himself to boiled meat instead.”

My policies

What were the different policies he established?

I, Charlemagne was an ambassadorial ruler  and very wisely governed my lands, bringing internal tranquility and prosperity. As the franks decided, monarchy was upon family legacy  and governmental issues were discussed between lord and follower. There wasn't lacking of  kindness between commoners as the community remained religious. The governmental education of clergy and protection of the church was fundamental. Furthermore, italian- Irish and English customs was very important to maintain scholars for education. Likewise, I also expanded schools, athletics, culture and scholarship and i established weights and measures which helped trade in my kingdom. Most importantly, the encouragement of the Carolingian renaissance while ruling the romans, inspiring the Carolingian miniscule, a form of writing that soon became a standard influence of modern Europe printed alphabets. Additionally, I implemented representatives in each region i conquered and each year we gathered in a general assembly .

Note: The French emperor accomplished most of his goals such as spreading Christianity and unity with military campaigns and warfare. Furthermore, he encouraged the Carolingian Renaissance in Europe while ruling the romans. He also got a lot of help from the church, since he protected the popes and gave money and land to them and was crowned by pope leo third in peter's basilica in Rome as a reward for defeating a rebellion against him, in which they were going to insensitively blind him and cut out his tongue, and by doing so it legitimized his rule on all his Italian terrains. One of his campaigns was a small crusade to protect northern Spain from Muslims in 778 and attempts to take Saragossa,  but he failed and retreated. This is known according to the chanson de Roland  to be the most heroic attempt and moment of this valiant figure.

My mission as a king

My mission as a king- ideologies

Being a king of such expanded territories comes with a cost, in my 46 years or so of ruling my people and I encountered many battles that we weren't meant to thrive in by the name of God. Many victims of murder that couldn't understand God's love for us, and for those who did believe, my job was to fully protect them from outsiders in our religion. I taught my people to be brave and not fear for the enemy, for it is one who gives the enemy the opportunity to stab you in the back. As I said in my living form: Let my armies be the rocks, and trees and the birds in the sky. Warfare was very important to keep my kingdom alive, I was decided to build a great army that would be feared by many. Right action is better than knowledge; but in order to do what is right we must know what is right. That's why education and internationality were crucial for the expansion and development  of my lands and goals, the most important aspect of regime is understanding. "To speak another language is to have another soul" I promoted education and christianity, because my goals were to unite all through God; in order for me to thrive I had to sacrifice and to fight for my people's believes.

"Make us eternal, truths receive, And practice all that we believe: Give us thyself that we may see.The father and the son by thee. "

Emerging as a leader in the 8th century

Emerging as a leader in the 8th century

For some significant leaders coming into power is a struggle, thankfully I was born in one of the most prejudice families  in france in 742, being the son of king pepin the short and the grandson of Charles martel, both great emperors. When my father died the 24th of September 768, only 58 years old, me and my brother were the successors of  his regiments. Divided into two realms, I became a young king of  the smallest part of the kingdom, and fairly shared the other half with my brother carloman, which later on betrayed me by denying me protection against an uprising in aquitaine. Just before we decided war in 771, my brother died and left me the emperor of the whole kingdom.

My ruling years were from 768 to 814 , I conquered many tribes such as the lombards and the Avars, and became king of a tribe called the "Franks" in 768, which was located in modern day western germany and around belgium and france.  I also was a victorious ruler of the west for 14 years and proudly crowned leader of the romans in 800 by Pope Leo third.
